Notes
NI0023Nicolas Goeller and his family arrived in New York from Harve on August 23, 1854, on the ship "Connecticut." Their home was in Bavaria. Family members included: Nicolas (farmer, age 50), Lisabeth (farmer, age 36), Anna Marie (farmer, age 20), Georg (farmer, 18), Margarith (9), Balthasar (7), Madeleine (5), Nicolas (.09), and Jean (farmer, age 26). (Germans To America, Vol. 8, p. 102)
Mary came from Bavaria with her parents in 1854 at age 22. They settled on a farm near Schliessingerville in 1858.
Mary appears in a 16x20" portrait that was probably taken in the 1870's. As far as we know, it is in the original frame. There is a cloth on Mary's head in her portrait because, according to Lucille LIED WALTER, she wore her hair away carrying baskets.
Mary's half-sister Lena Bodecker moved from Bucklin, Kansas, to Pueblo, Colorado.
According to her obituary, "The sad intelligence reached us yesterday that Mrs. Anna Maria WALTER, nee Goeller, one of the oldest inhabitants of our county had passed away in death at her home in the Town of Trenton, after a long and lingering illness. The deceased was born in Trulber, Bavaria, November 30th, 1832; she accompanied her parents to America in 1854, who settled on a farm in the vicinity of Schleisingerville. In the year 1858 she was married to Mr. Peter WALTER at Schleisingerville... After this they located on a farm in town Trenton, where they remained until claimed by death... The deceased was a good and loving wife and mother, a kind neighbor and leaves a large circle of friends who mourn her departure from this world." (West Bend Democrat, May 30, 1894)
According to another obituary from an unknown newspaper, "Mrs. Peter WALTER, nee Mary Goeller, of the Town of Trenton, died yesterday after being ill for about 2 months. Deceased was born in Bavaria, Germany, November 30, 1832; she was married at Schleissingerville, this county, in 1858. Her husband preceded her in death about 7 years ago. Five sons and 2 daughters survive to mourn the loss of a kind and loving mother. She also leaves 3 brothers and 2 sisters, the former residing in this county. Her funeral will be held tomorrow forenoon under the auspices of the Catholic Church and her remains will be laid to rest in Holy Angels Cemetery. May she rest in peace. To the bereaved children we extend our heartfelt sympathy."
According to her tombstone in Holy Angel's Cemetery in West Bend, Anna was born in 1832 and died in 1894.
