Biography

Robert Haddock was born in County Durham, England.

Early years

Robert was born in 1833. He is the son of Robert Haddock and Elizabeth Fenwick.

Robert was Christened on the 20th July 1834 in Lanchester, Durham. They were recorded as living at Ousterley West House.^[1][2]

Ousterley West House was situated on the east side of Mill Close to the east of Southmoor. It can be seen on 1857 OS Map. This is now the location of the South Moor Golf Club car park, possible where there appears to be some outbuildings.

In the 1841 census, Robert (age 6) was living with his family in South Moor in Lanchester, Durham, England.^[3]

Note that South Moor at this time, while close, does not map exactly to the South Moor of today, instead being slightly further south and adjacent to the Southmoor Colliery (William Pit). It is now known as Quaking Houses. (See map linked above.)

Married then Widowed

Eleanor Hunt and Robert Thirlaway Haddock were married by Banns on the 2nd May 1858 in St Margaret's Church, Crossgate, Durham, the Banns having been read out on 3 successive weeks on 11th, 18th and 25th April prior. They were both living in the parish at the time. The church is still there and known as St Margaret of Antioch Church. ^[6]

Eleanor's death (age 26) was registered in the Apr-May-Jun quarter of 1859 in the Durham district. It looks like she may have died as a result of complications of childbirth as a son Robert Thirlaway Haddock was registered in the same quarter and his death in the next quarter.^{[7][8][9][10]}

In the 1861 census, Robert (age 26), Coal Guard, was the widowed lodger of Mary Robinson at 45 Thames Street, Westoe, South Shields, Durham, England.^[11] 1861 Census, Anchestry.com England census Robert was a coal guard and a lodger, living with Mary Robinson head of household, 51 years old, b/d 1811and daughter Isabella Robinson 14 year old,b/d 1847 and grand daughter and Sarah Ann Atkinson 2 year old, b/d 1859 ,William Whiteman 22 years old, b/d 1839, George Hardy 22 years old, b/d 1839, William Barrace18 Years old, b/d 1843. Living in Westoe South Shields.

Second Marriage

Robert (age 27) married Mary Ann Claytor (age 27) on 3 August 1861 in Gateshead, Durham, England.^[12]

Their first child was Mary Elizabeth and her birth was registered in the Oct-Nov-Dec quarter of 1861 in the Durham district. There does not seem to be a baptism for her.^[13]

Then they had a son, John William was born on 28 April 1863 and baptised on 14 June in Broom, Durham, England.^[14][15]

Eliza Ellen was born on 10 July and baptised on 15 July 1865 in Broom, Durham, England.^[16][17]

Louisa Matilda was born on baptised on 21 February 1867 and baptised 3 March 1867.^[18][19]

Martha Agnes Haddock was born on 22 July 1869 and baptised on 9 September 1869.^[20][21]

All the children were baptised in the Catholic Our Blessed Lady and Joseph's Church, Brooms. Brooms is to the west of Annfield Plain, near to Consett.

In the 1871 census, Robert (age 36), Colliery Labourer, was the married head of household in Joicey Terrace, Durham, England. This is near to Annfield Plain and Quaking Houses.^[22] 1871 Census, Anchestry.com England census Robert was living with Mary A 36 years old, b/d 1835, John w 7 years old,b/d 1864, Louisa M 4 year old, b/d 1867 and Martha A 1 year old, b/d1870, in Joicey Terrace, Tanfield, Durham.

They had another child Robert Henry who was born on 7 October 1873 and baptised on 2 November, also at the Catholic church in Broom.^[23]Robert's birth was registered in the Oct-Nov-Dec quarter of 1873 in the Durham district.^[24]

1881 census. Robert was living with Mary Ann and four children in 34 Joiceys Terrace East Kyo, Durham.^[25][26]

Mary's death (age 47) was registered in the Jul-Aug-Sep quarter of 1881 in the Lanchester district.^[27]

In the 1891 census, Robert (age 56), Coal Miner, was the married head of household at 8 Eden Terrace, Urpeth, Durham, England.^[28]

Robert's death (age 64) was registered in the Jul-Aug-Sep quarter of 1898 in the Chester Le Street district.^[29]
