Biography

Samuel H. Hagan was born 14 Feb 1811 in Perry Township, Armstrong County, PA. He married Elizabeth Heasley in Franklin Township, Westmoreland Country, PA on 19 Apr 1835. Census records in 1850 show him and his wife Elizabeth living in Farmington with 7 children. Both Perry and Farmington are in present day Clarion County, PA. He passed away on 6 Sep 1851.

The 1850 census record lists the following in the household of Samuel and Elizabeth Hagan with the name misspelled as "Hagens". The info listed after the name are sex and age. Birthplace for all is "Pennsylvania".

  • John H Hagens, M, 14
  • Angelina Hagens, F, 12
  • Betsy Jane Hagens, F, 10
  • Sarah A Hagens, F, 7
  • Melinda E Hagens, F, 5
  • Robert W Hagens, M, 3
  • Jacob Hagens, M, 0
  • Smith Dobbs, M, 22

Probate court filing on 10/15/1851, with court docket number C430 listed for "Partition of Real Estate" and docket C 437 for "Other Proceedings". Lists Elizabeth Hagan (wife) and William Frazier as executors.

This is our Hagan line's "brick wall" ancestor. There are several "Hagan" or "Hogan" men listed in the 1820 and 1830 Censuses for the area where Samuel Hagan was born.

James HOGAN appears in the 1830 census and I initially thought that might be our James HAGAN. That James HOGAN has a documented genealogy here: https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/MSC8-JL9 including a child born the same year as Samuel, so he is unlikely to be Samuel's father.
