Biography

Eli was a Friend (Quaker)

Eli Carey Haines was born in Ohio in 1846. Although his birth was recorded at North Union Friends Monthly Meeting in Indiana, this was a register citing the births of all the family, not the place of birth. Eli was the son of Levi Haines and Charlotte Green.

Eli’s parents moved the family from Ohio to Indiana some time in the years between Eli’s birth in 1846 and the birth of his brother, John G Elmer, in 1848. The family settled in Waltz Township, Wabash County, Indiana.
Pvt. Eli Haines served in the United States Civil War.
Enlisted: January 20, 1865
Mustered out: September 4 1865
Side: USA
Regiment(s): Company A, 153rd Indiana Volunteer Infantry

Eli served as a Private with Company A of the 153rd Indiana Volunteer Infantry, which service indicates that Eli may have left the pacifist Quaker faith at this time. It is not conclusive, however, since other Quakers served in this and other wars.

On January 18, 1866, Eli married Nancy Jane Fordyce, the daughter of James William Fordyce, Jr and Mary Elizabeth Gregg, in Wabash County, Indiana. In 1870, Eli, a farm laborer, Nancy and their 2 children were living in Wabash County, Indiana, but before the birth of their daughter, Bertha, in 1875, they moved to Kansas where Eli farmed his own land. Eli’s wife, Nancy, died in Sumner County, Kansas on February 7, 1886.

Eli and Nancy had six children who were:

  • William Elington Haines (1867-1952), m. Leila Laverne Cutler;
  • Izora Ann Haines (1868-1908), m. Alexander Sherman McIntyre;
  • John Franklin Haines (1870-1962), m. Minnie M Day;
  • Bertha V Haines (1875-1877);
  • Chester Levi Haines (1878-1904), m. Captola C Good; and
  • Charles Owen Haines (1880-1957), m. Ida May Michael.

On October 30, 1892, Eli married Perlina Jane Miller Shamp. She was the widow of Jesse L Shamp and the daughter of Joseph Miller and Louise Katherine Adkins. This marriage may not have been a success; they were not recorded together in any subsequent census.

In 1900, Eli was living in Jasper County, Missouri with his son, Chester. In 1915, Eli was back in Kansas, living in his son, Charles Levi’s, household.

Eli died in Wichita, Kansas on May 22, 1915. He is buried at Greencastle Cemetery, Sumner County, Kansas.
