Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
John Hall was a South Carolina colonist.
Daughters of the American Revolution
John Hall is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A049788.

John Hall was born circa 1737 in either Ireland or Virginia. His birth year is based on his stated age at death. Many descendants propose that he is the son of William Hall and Mary Stapleton, however this remains unproven.

It is unsure whether John Hall came to South Carolina from Ireland or from Virginia. However, he seems to have lived in South Carolina as early as 1763. There, he met and married another immigrant, Prudence Patterson, also in about 1763. John Hall and Prudence Patterson had the following known children, who were all born in South Carolina:[1]

Jennet Hall Faris
Margaret Hall 1764–1822
William Henry Hall 1765–1827
John Hall 1765–1805
Alexander Brown Hall 1771–1831
James Ainsley Hall 1773–1822
Josiah Hall 1776–1867
Prudence Hall 1778–1851
Major Temple Hall 1781–1857

John Hall is well documented as a Revolutionary War soldier.[2] He served on the patriotic side as a Private with the 2nd South Carolina Militia.[3] Additionally, he is credited with civil service because he was a juror for the Camden District during the Revolutionary War.[4]

John Hall died in March of 1784 in the Camden District of South Carolina. However, his will is probated in Kershaw County.[5]Find a Grave, database and images (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/15643410/john-hall: accessed April 30, 2024), memorial page for John Hall (1737–Mar 1784), Find a Grave Memorial ID 15643410, citing Bethel Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Clover, York County, South Carolina, USA; Maintained by Edna Mode (contributor 46856343). He left a widow and nine children. Here is his original will, as recorded at Kershaw County, South Carolina in 1784, courtesy of the Family History Library repository of County records:

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Hall-27098 and Hall-14047 appear to represent the same person because: Same wife, a number of his children also match
So his grandparents were married in Virginia and he was born in Ireland? Eight years after his Father immigrated To the new world? Although the findagrave site in the sources says he (John) was born in England.
