Biography

This profile is part of the Hall Name Study.

Origin

Ralph was born c. 1655 at Dover, New Hampshire, the son of John Hall and Elizabeth,[1] possibly Elizabeth Learned.[2]

He was not the son of John Hall and Bethia (_____ Farmer?).[3]

Property Inherited and Granted

On February 1, 1685, Deacon John Hall conveyed to his son half of his land and house, the other half to be conveyed upon the father's death,[1] which occurred in 1697.

On July 11, 1694, he received from the town of Dover a grant of 20 acres, which was lost after a lawsuit by Richard Waldron, who claimed by prior grant; the town apparently made that up by giving him land elsewhere.[1]

Civic Duties

Ralph was auditor for Dover in 1702, and constable in 1705.[1]

Family

Ralph married twice.

  • He married first to Unknown Unknown.[1], who died before 1701.
  • He married 2) on May 21 1701 to Mary Chesley, [4]daughter of Philip Chesley.[1] Her sister Esther married John Hall.[1] After Ralph died, Mary married as her 2nd to John Foy.[1]

Children of Ralph Hall and his 1st wife:[1]

  1. John, b. perhaps 1685
  2. James, b. perhaps 1687
  3. Jonathan, weak and sick, b. perhaps 1690
  4. Isaac, who removed to Massachusetts, b. perhaps 1693

Children of Ralph Hall and Mary Chesley:[1]

  1. Benjamin, b. June 1702
  2. Ralph, b. perhaps 1704
  3. Joseph, b. March 26, 1706, m. Peniel Bean, 19 Dec 1731[5]

Death and Legacy

Ralph died November 13, 1706 at Dover, New Hampshire. He died after six days illness with grievious pain in his side and fever,[1][6] possibly appendicitis?

He died intestate. His sons John and James were appointed administrators on 4 March 1706-7, and the estate was divided among seven sons, with a double portion to John, the eldest, and L.15 reserved for the weak and sick Jonathan.[1]
