Biography

Halls of New England by David Brainard Hall, 1883, p.73: [1] "WILLIAM HALL5, Joshua4, Isaac3, Isaac2, Francis1: b. in Fairfield, Nov. 4, 1741; d. 1824, age 83; m., 1763, Sarah Peck, d. 1831 , in Hartford, N. Y. In his youth he was a clothier, draper and tailor, afterwards he became a farmer. He was an ensign in his father's company April 26, 1777, when the British destroyed the military stores at Danbury, and he bore the body of Gen. Wooster from the field. In 1808 he removed to Hartford, Washington Co., N.Y., where he died. Children were: 1. Enoch, m. ( ???) Reymond; 2. Andrew, m. (???) Heath; they both removed with their families in the early part of the century to New York State and left descendants in Watertown and Remsen. 3. Zalmon (Family 7). 4. Lyman (Family 8). 5. Eli, m. (???) Booth. 6. Ammon (Family 9). 7. William (Family 10). 8. Sally, m. (???) Peck. 9. Anne, m. (???) Horth, and was the only one living in 1876. "

  2. ) Ancestor's Service: Revolutionary War Service Narrative of Lt. William Hall as recounted by James P. Hall in Sept 1893 SAR application:
    1. ) Transcription of account: Lieut. Wm Hall was enrolled in the Connecticut Militia, although his name does not appear in the Connecticut Accord of Men in the War of the Revolution. Benj. F. Hall, my father remembered personally hearing Wm Hall say that he took part in the battle of Danbury Conn. in 1777. {Editorial: the veracity of this assertion is viable, as Benjamin F Hall was 10 years old when his Great Grandfather Lt. William Hall died.} His principal service, however was in command of a party of coast guardsman, stationed for four years (according to Orcutt's History of Stratford and Bridgeprot) at what is now known as Bridgeport. Two of this party, who enlisted in 1781 were pensioned and they refer to Lt. William Hall in their affidavits, thus conclusively proving the service. A copy of the records of the Pension Office at Washington is made a part of this application.
  3. ) Letter from Department of Interior: Letter from John C. Black, Commissioner of the US Department of Interior, Bureau of Pensions. This letter affirms the Revolutionary war Service of Lt. William Hall by providing documentation from the pension applications of two Revolutionary war soldiers, Lyman and Wildman Hall, citing their service in the Revolutionary War in the company under the command of Lt. William Hall.
    1. ) Lyman Hall, son of Lt. William Hall, b. Stratford, Conn on 13 July 1766; m. Charity Odell of Fairfield; d. Kent, Conn. on 9 Nov 1837. His widow in Aug 1838, age 69, was a resident of Kent, Conn.
      1. ) In 1781, Lyman enlisted at Stratford for a period of 2 years into the company of his father Lt. William Hall, which under orders of Gen. Selick Silliman was stationed at New Fairfield, now Bridgeport, to guard the coast. A greater part of the time billeted at the old store of Capt. Burrough's in Bridgeport.
      2. ) Ichabod Beardslee of Lansing, Tompkins, NY testified in Oct 1838 that he lived in the same town with Hall and served in the same company with him.
    2. ) Wildman Hall, son of David Hall, born Apr 1768, in Fairfield, Conn, and later removed to Weston, Conn. where he was a resident on Jan 1833.
      1. ) Wildman Hall took the place of his brother Matthew Wild, who was drafted into the service. Wildman served 2 months in the Company of David Porter of Roxbury and was stationed as a guard a Horse Neck in Greenwich, Conn. In April 1781, then being 16 years old, he volunteered for one year under Lt. William Hall of Stratford in the Sea Coast Guard, stationed at Bridgeport and Stratfield Beach, in which latter place the company occupied a guard house. Lyman Hall testified that he enlisted with Wildman Hall for one year at the same time under Lt. William Hall. Gideon Wells of Bridgeport served in 1781 one year with said Wildman.

    1. ) Joshua Hall, son of Isaac and Sarah Ann (____) Hall was born Sept. 1703 at Fairfield, Connecticut and he died in October of 1789 at the age of 86. Married in 1738 Sarah Burgess. Removed to Reading, Connecticut, where he died, greatly lamented. He had been a selectman of the town for many years, was a captain of the militia, and a member of county board of safety and protection in 1775 and 76. During the Revolutionary War he furnished transportation, and forage for the eastern division of the American army, and was very much honored as a patriotic citizen. He was distinguished for his very large statue.
