In 1765 Ruben Brown built a homestead in Riverhead, NY. Sometime after the Revolutionary War it was sold to Ezra Hallock, who lived on the 60 acre farm until 1801, when it was sold to his brother Captain Zachariah Hallock. The Captain purchased it for his son, Zachariah (who had married Mary Aldrich in June, 1800), and never lived on the property himself. He lived a short distance away. Once a male became old enough to marry it was traditional to present him with part of the family farm so that he would have the means to support his own family. By the late 1800s so many Hallock descendants were living in this area of Long Island that it became known as Hallockville. Descendants of Zachariah Hallock lived in the old homestead until 1979, when Zachariah's great-granddaughter Ella Hallock, age 95, moved into a nursing home. She died in Riverhead at the age of 100. The original homestead has been transformed into the Hallockville Museum Farm. It includes 16 historic houses, barns and outbuildings on 28 acres of land. It is a non-profit organization created to preserve and interpret the history of farming on the North Fork of Long Island, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
