Mary Halstead was born in Canada in 1833. She was the daughter of Henry Halstead (1807-1867) and Minerva Halstead (1805–1870). She was sister to Irving Halstead (1831–1882).
She married William D Freeman. They had about 12 children. She died in California in 1913. She and her husband are considered California Pioneers. They married in Illinois in 1850.

Mary Halstead Freeman was 80 years old when she died. She is buried in Tomales Presbyterian Cemetery, Tomales, Marin County, California, USA.

Mary Halstead is enumerated in the 1850 census, in the town of Coral, McHenry county, Illinois. She is 17 years old and living with her parents, 6 siblings and her sisters children.
A few months later, on September 15, 1850, she married Warren Darius Freeman. They had two children in Illinois, Emil and George.
In 1854 they crossed the plains, landing in Amador county. On the way over, in Utah, Mary gave birth in a covered wagon to son William.
They settled in Amador county, them moved on to Tomales township, Marin county. Records show they had 10 more children, while in Tomales.
