Tilden[1] tells us that Charles "was engaged for many years in the profession of teaching ; more recently, in insurance, as an auctioneer, and in transacting various legal business. He married in 1841 Mary Bosworth, who died in 1844; second, Harriet J. Hunt of Medway."
He is listed as a delegate to the "Antimasonic Republican Convention For Massachusetts No. 5" in 1834[2]. This party existed to "advance the cause of equal rights by the suppression of secret societies." The Wikipedia entry for this party can be found here.
The 1855 Massachusetts census lists his occupation as "teacher".[3]. The 1870 federal census lists his occupation as "clerk".[4] The 1880 federal census lists his occupation as "farmer".[5] In both 1870 and 1880, daughter Alice was living with Charles and Harriet.
His death registration lists his occupation as "Ins. broker"
He passed away in 1889.
