Robert Hamilton was born in Barre, Massachusetts March 31, 1732. On October 1, 1767 he married Margaret Conkey, b. April 28, 1846, the daughter of Alexander Conkey of Pelham, MA and they set up a second farm in Conway, Massachusetts. He signed the motion on January 12, 1767 to request Conway split off from nearby Deerfield to form it's own town. Robert went back and forth between the two farms until his second son, Micah, took over the Barre farm some years later. Robert quickly became a patriot of the American cause in the battle for American independence and rose to the rank of Lieutenant in Captain David Cowden's Company, Col. Benjamin Ruggles Woodbridge regiment. He first engaged April 27, 1775 serving three months and responding to the alarms at Lexington and Concord. Then, again, he fought at Prospect Hill September 28, 1775 and then again in August, 1777 marching towards Bennington, Vermont under Captain William Cooley's Company in the Hampshire Regiment. When he was in Conway, he served as a Tax Collector in 1779 and 1782 and a Representative to the the General Court of Massachusetts in 1786 and 1787.. His promotion signed by John Hancock attached.
