Biography

Stephen Wesley Hovious Son of William HOVIOUS and Sarah HARDING. Born in 1800, Kentucky.

Stephen married (1) 19 Aug 1824, in Lawrence Co., Indiana, Betsy Elizabeth HAMILTON, (Daughter of John] and Nancy Hamilton) [1]. These are their known children:

  1. John Hovious (I). Born 1826, died 1826.
  2. William Hovious, b. 15 Sep 1827, died 25 Dec 1852
  3. Paris Hovious, b. 6 Jun 1829, d. 1868, Mattoon, IL. Married Eliza Majors.
  4. Rachel Hovious b. 8 Apr 1831. Married John P. SULLIVAN, 18 Aug 1849, Monroe Co., IN. Rachel died on 29 Jan 1902, in Logan, Kansas.
  5. Unnamed Boy, born 8 Apr 1831, died young.
  6. James Hovious, b. 4 Jul 1834, died of a fever, 1841.
  7. John Hovious (II), born 1836, died of a fever, 1846.
  8. Lemon Hovious, b. 2 Aug 1838, died 1854 cutting timber.
  9. Thomas Hovious, b. 7 Oct 1839, d. 22 Jan 1896.
  10. Bedford Hovious, born 1843. Died 16 October 1864.

Betsy died in 1845. He married (2) 17 Mar 1846, in Monroe Co., IN, Rachel HAMILTON BALES, (Daughter of John and Nancy Hamilton). They had no children. Stephen Wesley Hovious died in 1873.

Stephen Hovious moved to Monroe Co., Indiana in 1826. Over the next quarter-century, Stephen bought from the US government several patches of land in Monroe County: first in March 1837 forty acres, then forty more in February 1849, 37 acres in July 1852, and an additional 37 acres in August 1853. He also bought some land from one James Bean on 23 August, 1850; he appears to have ended up owning at least 200 acres of land.
