STORY

I am listing this as a story because I have not seen the documentation or evidence. However, the person who told it to me is a well-respected family researcher of the Families Hammon, Stone and Hall
Name Change From Hammond to Hammon
By Scott Hammon Hendricks
Last night, 21 June 2021 some of the descendants of Wendell Philucius Hammon had a family Zoom reunion. Roberta Ruth 'Bert" Jaeger wife of John Lee Hammon my father's first cousin asked me if I knew that the family name was originally Hammond. Bert is one of the foremost family researchers for the families Hammon, Stone and Hall. When I told her 'no', she recounted (without digging to the numerous boxes of history) that the original family to migrate to Colonial British America were named Hammond, and that there was a deep schism in the family of Thomas Hammond and Alice Stone. It was sufficient to cause son, Daniel Hammond, my 3rd great-grandfather to move from New York to western Pennsylvania and to change his name to Hammon, as not to be associated with the family Hammond.
So apparently, here begins the new family name of Hammon.

  • Brick Home Built By Daniel 1810 Sherburne, New York

by Scott Hammon Hendricks 3rd great grandson On 1 Apr 2023 I received two emails from Alan Estus of Sherburne, New York (below copied and pasted) concerning Daniel and the brick home he built. Apparently, to town records in Sherburne, Daniel was a Master Brick Maker and built a home using approximately 35,000 bricks. I am attaching a photograph taken in 1875 of the home.

Scott, I live at 577 Westhill Rd. in Sherburne, NY. This house has been in my family since 1928 when my maternal grandparents bought this farm and ran a dairy operation until they retired. I have always been told the house (brick) was built in 1810. In the Sherburne Centennial booklet there is a listing of recollections of an "Old Timer". Listed is Daniel Hammond and he is noted as a 'Brick Maker". Searching property records Daniel owned this land in the early 1800's before moving to Dryden, NY (per your info). There was a 2 acre lot added to this farmland which contains the site where the clay for the bricks was dug. Adjacent to the "pond" is where the bricks must have been fired as there are lots of brick fragments there. we visited the Dryden Historical Society as Daniel built the house they now occupy for a Mr. Southworth. Southworth is the name in the deed progression after Daniel so I assume he, Southworth, bought this property so Daniel could move to Dryden. Hope some of this is of interest to you. If you reply I will send a picture of the house as it looked around 1875 as I don't know how to attach a file to this initial message.

Scott, Thanks for the reply. Marshall would have been born here in this house when it was about 3 years old. This is so interesting. I wish I could go back for a day and see how they lived and how the land differed. They had to be tough to survive. I've attached the photo from around 1875. The Harrington's owned the farm at that point, about 1837 to 1928, and this is before the current addition was built. I've always wondered how long it took to build the brick part of the house. From rough measurements I've estimated there are about 35,000 bricks in the house and that does not include any for the 4 fireplaces that were once here (and we wish they still were). Sounds like a big house but it's only 24 by 34 or there abouts which was cozy for the 12 or so people living here according to the 1810 census. I will send more pictures of the house today plus the "pond" which is the hole from where the clay was taken if you'd like to see them.

Alan

Family Sheets

Family group records for Peter Stone, Thomas Hammon and Daniel Hammon, all of which relate to the Alice Stone Family Bible.
Peter Stone of Cranston son of Peter Stone and Elizabeth Shaw and grandson of Hugh Stone and Abigail Busicot was born 22 Oct 1698 at his father's home in Warwick (later Cranston). He inherited this land, which was passed on to his oldest son, Peter, and raised his family there where he died about 1783(1). His wife, Patience Printing, whose origin is unknown, died in Cranston 1 April 1760, aged 60 years. They were married in Providence 20 Jan 1725/6 and had two sons and three daughters:
  1. Elizabeth (2) b - ca 1727 d - abt. 1783 m - Jeremiah Angell (3)
  2. Peter (4) b - 20 May 1729 d - Aug 1785 m1 - est. 1753 - Mary Hammon (5) m2 - 24 Mar 1776 - Patience Hudson
  3. Samuel (6) b - ca 1733 d - ca 1810 m - 7 June 1756 - Mary Blanchard (7)
  4. Patience b - ca 1735 d - est. 1760 m - est. 1755 - Thomas Hammon
  5. Alice (8) b - 30 July 1738 d - May 1826 m - est. 1762 - Thomas Hammon

Footnotes

(1.) Freeman, Providence 1753. Will dated 15 May 1773, proved 8 Apr 1783, Cranston, RI Probate Bk 2 p 387 - 388. Sons Peter Stone Jr., Samuel Stone; daughters Elizabeth Angell, Alse Hammon. (note: that this will lists daughter, Alice Hammon, and not daughter, Patience, who had died earlier.)
(2.) Listed in will of husband dated 1783. Stone Genealogy states: "no children".
(3.) Scituate Wills, v 1 p 538, Will dated 25 Mar 1783, recorded 10 Jan 1786, mentions: Wife Elizabeth Angell who received all the good and furniture that she brought to me with her; previous wife, Abigail. By first wife; sons: Andrew, Joseph, Job and Daniel; daughters: Mary Cook, Freelove Ralph, Lydia Mathewson.
NOTE: Freelove Ralph was widow of David Ralph son of Thomas Ralph and Mary Stone daughter of Hugh Stone.
(4.) Freeman, Providence 1755. Will dated 6 Aug 1785, proved 20 Aug 1785, Cranston, RI Probate Bk 2 p 443 - 445. Wife Patience; sons: Peter, Amos, John, Whipple, Andrew and Hopkins; daughters: Patience, Phebe, Mehitable, Deliverance and Freelove. Four young children Mary, Eseck, Sally and Welcome to live with their mother.
(5.) Cranston, RI VR "died 22 Mar 1775 aged 37y, 9m", 17d, i.e. born 5 June 1735. Note that she was born the same day as Thomas Hammon, the husband of her two sisters-in-law, Patience and Alice. This circumstance strongly implies that they were twins - brother and sister. Note: This twin sister, Margaret (Hammond) Stone, has a profile in WikiTree.
(6.) Cranston, RI Probate Bk 2 p 90 - 93. Will dated 3 Oct 1804 proved 24 Feb 1810, mentions: wife Mary; Sons James, Samuel, Edmund, Nathaniel, Rufus and Thomas; daughters: Almy Potter and two unnamed wives of William Hill and Thomas Hill fathers of grandchildren; grandson Edmund Stone son of Edmund; Three grandchildren Alce Hill and Mary Hill daughters of Wm and Jonathan Hill sons of Thomas.
(7.) Cranston VR. Dau of Timothy Blanchard.
(8.) Alice does not occur in the list of children of Peter and Patience Stone as given in the Stone Family genealogy. This record gives one wife, Patience, and two children, John and Phebe. However, the will of Peter Stone gives daughter Alse, and not Patience. Furthermore, the record of Thomas Hammon in the Hammon Family Bible lists only his wife, Alice. Following the birth of the first child, John, which could not have been a child of Alice, because of the data and age. There is a gap of several years before the next child which indicates there having been a first and a second wife.
Thomas Hammon born 5 June 1737 may have grown up in the household of his father-in-law Peter Stone. He married successively both of the youngest two daughters. The dates of these marriages can only be estimated. Also, the dates of birth and death of the first wife, Patience, can only be estimated. His second wife, Alice, was born in Cranston, RI 20 July 1736. About 1800 he moved with his family to Killingly, CT and a few years later to Sherburne, Chenango Co., NY where he died 24 March 1814. His wife, Alice, later moved with her youngest son, Daniel, to Dryden, Tompkins Co., NY where she died in May 1826.
