Harding Hampton was born enslaved about July 1849 in Grayson, Virginia, United States, son of Gilbert Hampton and Edith Schooler. He was brought to Missouri by his slave owner sometime before the Civil War. In 1880 he was living in the household of Rufus McComas, a farmer and steamboatman. His occupation was listed as "Man of All Work".
He married Angeline Williams on 26 December 1872 in Otoe County, Nebraska, United States.[1]
He later married George Robinson on 13 October 1881 in Otoe County, Nebraska, United States.[2]
He then married Bellvinia (Williams) Tarwater on 24 March 1885 in Otoe County, Nebraska, United States.[3]
