Paul Theodor HANKE was born on 4 February 1866 in Kamnig, Grottkau, Silesia, Prussia, Germany.

He appears to have visited Australia a number of times as a member of the crew on several ships before finally deciding to settle down in Australia

Neckar arrived 1 October 1891 in Sydney; Crew: Pastry cook^[1]

Oldenburg arrived 18 December 1892 in Sydney; Crew: Confectioner^[2]

Hohenstauffen arrived 21 October 1893 in Sydney; Crew: Cook^[3]

Darmstadt arrived 23 June 1895 in Sydney; Crew: Confectioner^[4]

Oldenburg arrived 30 May 1896 in Sydney; Crew: Cook^[5]

According to his naturalization papers, Paul arrived in Australia aboard the ship, Friedrich Der Grosse which left Bremen, Germany on 18 November 1896 and arrived in Sydney, Australia on 11 January 1897^[6]. (No crew/Passenger list has been located for this trip).
