He appears to have visited Australia a number of times as a member of the crew on several ships before finally deciding to settle down in Australia

According to his naturalization papers, Paul arrived in Australia aboard the ship, Friedrich Der Grosse which left Bremen, Germany on 18 November 1896 and arrived in Sydney, Australia on 11 January 1897[6]. (No crew/Passenger list has been located for this trip).
May 1912, Paul applied to become a Naturalized Australian citizen[8]
He passed away on 10 June 1940 in Newtown, New South Wales, Australia[9] and was buried at the Rookwood General Cemetery, Rookwood[10].
