Biography

Notables Project
Katherine Hankey is Notable.
Katherine was a Protestant missionary.

Arabella Katherine Hankey was born in 1834 at London, England, the daughter of a prosperous banker. Her family were devout Anglicans and members of the Clapham Sect. [1]

Katherine, as she was known, was inspired by the Methodist revival of John Wesley and organised and taught in Sunday schools in London. She then did missionary work as a nurse in South Africa, assisting her brother. [1]

Whilst bedridden for a long convalescence Katherine wrote her 100-verse poem, The Old, Old Story, in two parts: The Story Wanted and The Story Told. The poem produced the well-known hymns, Tell me the old, old story and I Love to Tell the Story. [2]

Katherine passed away, unmarried, aged 77 years, in 1911 at St George Hanover Square, London. [3]
