Emma Jane Hanley was born in 1856 in Faversham, Kent, England to Thomas Hanley and Betsy (Young) Hanley. Her birth was registered in Faversham in the third quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Young.[1]
Emma Jane Hanley, daughter of Thomas, a cooper, & Betsey, was christened on 19 Apr 1857 at St Botolph in Northfleet, Kent.[2]
In 1861 Emma Hanley (age 4) lived at Stone Bridge in Northfleet with her father Thomas (29, Cooper), mother Betsey (29), and sister Susanna M (1).[3]
In 1871 Emma Hanley (age 14, Servant) lived at 127 Kent St in Great Grimsby, Lincolnshire in the household of her employer William Boulton (52, Fish Curer Empl 1 Man 2 Boys) - also in the household were William's wife and four sons.[4] Emma's family lived at 13 Bath St in Great Grimsby: father Thomas (39, Cooper), three siblings: Susannah (11, Scholar), Elizabeth A (9, Scholar), and Thomas W (7, Scholar), and grandfather William Hanley (75, Ship Carpenter).

Emma Jane Hanley (age 26, spinster, residing at 51 Rendal Street in Grimsby, daughter of Thomas Hanley, cooper) and Charles Neal (age 26, bachelor, mariner, residing at 86 Chapman Street in Grimsby, son of Stephen Neal, pilot) were married on 10 Oct 1882 at St James in Grimsby - the witnesses were Scupholm Hufton & Susannah Hanley.[5][6] The marriage was registered in Caistor, Lincolnshire in the last quarter of the year.[7]
In 1891 Emma J Neal (age 34) lived in Great Grimsby with her husband Charles (34, Mariner) and three children: Stephen (4), May (3), and Susannah (1).[8]
Emma's husband passed away in 1892.
In 1901 Emma Jane Neal (age 43, Letter of Apartments) lived at Hainton Street in Clee, Lincolnshire with three of her children: Stephen (14, Pupil Teacher), Mary[May] (12), and Lucy[Susie] (10), as well as her sister Susan Hanley (41).[9] Emma's other son, Charles (8, Merchant Sailor's Child), was living in Sculcoates, Yorkshire (there was a large home/school for the children of deceased seamen there).
In 1911 Emma Jane Neal (age 52) lived in Clee with her four children: Stephen (24, Assistant Schoolmaster), Charles (18, Fish Salesman), May (22, Dressmaker), and Susie (20, Milliner), sister Susannah Hanley (50), and two boarders: Kitty May (23, Sorting Clerk Telegraphist) and Osbet Mordant Burrows (19, Bank Clerk).[10]
In 1921 Emma Jane Neal (age 63) lived in Clee with her son Charles (29) and two others: Oscar W Malmbrick (22) and Hans Rosland (23).[11]
In 1939 Emma J Neal (born in 1856) lived at 2 Sunny Corner in Grimsby with Grace Batley (1876).[12]
Emma J Neal passed away in 1947, aged 90 years. Her death was registered in Grimsby in the first quarter of the year.[13] She is buried at Scartho Road Cemetery in Grimsby.[14]
