Biography
Andrew Hanlon was born 14 May 1894.[1][2][3] He was the son of William Hanlon[1][2] and Margaret Gallagher.[1][2][3] His parents baptised him on 27 May 1894 at St. Marys in Lanark, Lanarkshire, Scotland (this was a Roman Catholic church).[1]
In the 1901 census William and Margaret were living in Lesmahagow with three children: Andrew (age 6), Bernard (3) and Cecilia (1).[2]
At the start of 1915 Andrew was a 20 year old miner, living at home with his parents at Fence Row, Tillietudlem, Kirkmuirhill, near Lanark.[3] He attested for the First World War on 11 Jan 1915 and joined the Gordon Highlanders 11th Battallion as a private four days later.[3]
