Biography

John was born in Girvan, Ayrshire on 28 June 1834 and baptised there on 10th August 1834. He was the youngest child of David Hannah and Janet Fairlie.

In 1841, John was living with his family at an address in Hamilton Street, Girvan. He was 6 years old. [1]

In 1851, John was living with his family in Montgomerie Street, Girvan. He was 16 and his profession was 'nailor'. [2]

In 1861 John was living with his father in Montgomerie Street, Girvan. He was 26 years old and his profession was described as 'agent'. [3]

His son, John Hannah was born on 6th April 1865. [4]

His mother was Elizabeth McKnight and John married her in Dailly on 3rd October, the same year, [5]

John did not survive infancy and died on 20 January 1867 of Scarletina. John registered the death and gave the family address as 'Dalrymple Street, Girvan'. His occupation was 'merchant'.[6]

Their second son, David Hannah was born in Girvan on 24th July 1867. John registered the birth and gave tghe family's address as 'Dalrymple Street, Girvan'. His occupation was 'merchant'.[7]

At some point following David's birth, Elizabeth and David joined John in the Hutchesontown area of Glasgow,Lanarkshire.Their third son, Robert, was born there on 21 February 1870. John registered the birth and gave a home address of '217 Thistle Street, Glasgow. His occupation was 'spirit dealer's salesman'.[8]

The 1871 Census has the family living at 217 Thistle Street, Hutchesontown, Glasgow, supported by a thirteen year old servant, Agnes McKay. John's occupation is described as 'Wine Merchant'. [9]

Robert died shortly after the Census was taken, of bronchitis, on 25th May 1871 [10] and Elizabeth returned to Girvan.

David died there on 26th June 1872 of phthysis [11]. John registered the death but although he gave the home address as 'Dalrymple Street, Girvan', he gave his address as '217 Thistle Street, Glasgow' suggesting he had not accompanied David and Elizabeth to Girvan. Elizabeth herself died on 16th September the same year; her cause of death was consumption. Her death was registered, not by her husband, but by her brother-in-law, Alexander Gordon. It is entirely possible that the address in Dalrymple Street, so much used by the Hannahs was in fact the home address of Elizabeth's sister, Agnes and her husband, Alexander Gordon. [12]
