Biography

Sarah Hanson was born on 31 July 1791 in New Brunswick. Her parents were William Hanson and Dorcas (Milliken) Hanson[1]. She married James Haley in 1810. They lived at Bocabec until 1814, when they relocated to Pickering, Ontario. Sarah passed away there in February 1881.[1]

Her obituary (Saint John Christian Visitor, March 30 1881):[2]

Calmly slept in Jesus, Monday 7th Feb. 1881 at the residence of her son-in-law, near Tilsonburg, Sarah HALEY, age 89 years 6 mos. She was born in St. Andrews (Charlotte Co.) July 31st, 1791. Her maiden name was Sarah HANSON and she was the eldest of 18 children in her father's family. In 1810 she was married to James HALEY by Parson Andrews, an Episcopal clergyman on the 8th November of that year. Before she gave her hand to her husband of her youth, she had given her heart to her Saviour, for we find that she was baptized by public profession of her faith in Christ by Rev. Joseph Crandall in 1807. Eleven children, three sons and eight daughters, blessed union and surrounded the family table. Five of these still reside in Canada, two are in San Francisco and one in Iowa. Her daughter, who is in San Francisco, Mrs. Dorcas CLARK, was well known in Pickering and Toronto. Her connection with the Normal School in Toronto continued for 12 years during which time she was a member of the Bond Street Baptist Church. Her daughters in Ontario, Mrs. Joseph JEFFERY of London, Mrs. BRADBURN and Mrs. LANE of Dereham and Mrs. John GOSTICK of Mapleton. In the year 1841, Mrs. Haley with her husband and family emigrated from New Brunswick to the Township of Pickering near Toronto which was for the most part an unbroken wilderness and settled there on the 6th, near where the Baptist chapel now stands. A Baptist church was soon afterwards formed of which she and her husband were consistent members. Her funeral sermon was preached by Rev. J.B. Moore.
