Marriage. On 19th August 1940, Ethel married James New at Quandialla, New South Wales. It was the first military wedding to be conducted in the town and was held at the Church of Ascension. Her father gave her away and her matron of honour was her sister-in-law, Thomas's wife. Ethel's brother John was the groom's best man. A dozen local A.I.F. men, at home on leave, formed a guard of honour as they left the church and escorted them to Thomas Hanstock junior's home for the informal reception. Ethel and James travelled by train to the city (Sydney) for their honeymoon. [3] The marriage was registered in the Grenfell district, New South Wales. [4]

Death. Ethel died 24th January 1984. [5] A death notice, published 26th January 1984 in the Illawarra Mercury, says Ethel New died at the Mt. Warrigal Rest Home on 24th January, aged 78. [6]

Interment. James and Ethel are memorialised in the Wollongong Memorial Gardens, First Rose Garden, Section 7L, sites 63 & 64. Their plaques read: [7]
