Biography

Thomas was born in 1826, son of Thomas Hardie and Helen McPheron ^[1]. He married Helen Innes in 1849 ^[2]. They immigrated to the US in 1849 (1900 census record) and first settled in Illinois where they had children Ellen in 1850, Thomas in 1852, and Margaret in 1853 in Illinois. They then moved to the gold fields of California and had children Floria in 1856, Mary in 1860, and John in 1862. Helen died in 1870 and Thomas remarried to widow Louisa Chalmers in 1884. They moved to San Jose, Santa Clara, CA, where they owned a fruit farm until their deaths. She died in 1913 and he died in 1918 ^[3].

PLACERVILLE PIONEER PASSES

PLACERVILLE (El Dorado Co) November 14—, Thomas Hardie an old resident of this place, is dead at San Jose.

Deceased was a native of Scotland and was 92 years of age. He had resided in this section for many years where he engaged in farming. He was at one time a member of the Board of Supervisors.

He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Margaret Tracy, Mrs. C W Childs and Mrs. A. Cattanach; two sons J. I. Hardie of Salinas and T. O. Hardie of Placerville; also a sister Mrs. Helen Bosworth.

Another notice in the El Dorado Republican (Placerville, California), 15 Nov 1918, Fri, Page 2, has essentially the same text but notes he died Tuesday morning the 12th, and that his remains were sent to Oakland for cremation.

Research Notes

He is noted as a surviving brother of Oswald Hardie with a residence of San Jose in Oswald's obituary of 23 Feb 1917.

There are numerous newspaper notices for a Thomas O. Hardie and wife Ida M. Irwin in Placerville. That is his son and daughter-in-law who married 9 Jun 1884 ^[4].
