So he was married to Arsenath Berdick at least until 1850, and presumably at least since 1837 when their first child was born. Was Arsenath the same as Ascenith in the 1850 census, if so, did she really have a daughter at age 13?

If Eliza Jane were his daughter, she would have been from a marriage prior to his marriage with Arsenath Berdick, and not be living with him any longer by 1850 when Eliza would be 12 years old.

Conclusion: Eliza Jane is probably not his daughter and Ms. Slocum was probably not his wife.

I have a copy of family record (diary of her brother, Elisha W. Harding ) that lists all of Elisha Gardner Harding's wives and children. Yes, Elisha G. Harding was married to first Olive Slocum who died after July 1840 to Oct 1841 in NY or PA and yes, they did have a daughter named Eliza Jane Harding. She was born 1 August 1838. In the 1850 census she was age 12, living with Ebenezer Daley, age 25 & Marcia Daley age 24 (and their two children) in Warsaw, Jefferson County, PA Census: Line Number 15, Dwelling Number 15, Family Number 15 .... not too far from her father's family. Eliza Jane married John Wolcott 27 Jan 1856 Shiawassee, Michigan, She had two children - Jotham and Olive. Although she married in Shiawassee County, MI she lived in Fox, Clearfield County, PA in the 1860 census. Family story handed down thorough the years is that she was murdered told to her brother who is my great grandfather.... I don't know if in Michigan or PA.

Elisha G Harding and Olive also had children: Mary born 1834 and died between 1880 to 1884 in North Branch, Lapeer, Michigan; Fidelia Olive Harding born 03 NOV 1836 Allegany, New York, died 23 SEP 1888 Brockway, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania; Franklin Harding born 26 JUL 1840 Allegany, New York, Death 23 MAY 1849 Warsaw, Jefferson, Pennsylvania.

Elisha G Harding went on to marry Eliza Waight in 1841 and Asenath Burdick in 1843 and had many more children.

I am great grand-daughter of Merritt Harding b. 5 June 1855 in Steuben County, NY; died 10 Nov 1937 in Corunna, Shiawassee County, MI. I have his diary/ledger/bible and lots of letters to his brother. Merritt is the son of Elisha G. Harding, b. 21 Nov 1814; died 23 August 1859, Elisha G. Harding is the son of Jesse Harding and Anna Gardner. Merritt recorded the births of Jesse and Anna Gardner Harding and also Merritt's father Elisha G. Harding as follows:

The following was in the personal journal of Elisha Wesley Harding (1851-1951), grandson of Jesse Harding, 31 May 1792 and Anna Gardner. 26 July 1792 He mentions his grandparents Jesse and Anna in is diary Jesse and Anna's children:

    • ” Tilla” Merritt mentions a marriage in his letter home to his brother Elisha W Harding. Letter is dated 10 Feb 1871 from Little Toby, Elk County, PA and it mentions his new wife 16yr old 'Tilla”.. nothing further has been found. No known children.
    • Merritt's marriage to Ann Stover Budd is mentioned in a letter to his brother Elisha W. Harding and is found in Genessee County, MI court document. Marriage on 12 Nov 1876. No known children and unknown if divorced.
    • Marriage to Gemima Gerritt mentioned in his ledger/diary. He married her using the name Merritt S. Horton on 16 Nov 1879 in Spring Valley, Filmore Co., Minnesota. No known children. No divorce has been found.
    • Merritt married wife Helena Peterson who died 21 Aug 1881 using the alias Samuel M Holman. They married 27 Sept 1880 he had a daughter born that was not named in the ledger. The still born baby died 19 Aug 1882, Helena died 21 August 1882. He mentions the marriage, the baby's birth and death and Helena Holman's death in his ledger/diary.
    • With Ursilla Burk born 12 June 1859 in Germany; married 5 June 1883 used the name Matthew Samuel Holman per the marriage certificate. Their marriage and all their children's names and births are written in is ledger. He lived with Ursilla until her death.

I am testing the hypothesis that Elisha Gardiner Harding is the father of my ancestor Eliza Jane Harding. About 1-3% of my dna would come from Elisha if this hypothesis were true. If you have a GEDmatch number (which you can easily get by uploading your dna tests from other sources to GEDmatch) it would be easy to compare dna with me - Stewart 27807.
