Lamartine Griffin Hardman, III of Athens died Saturday, September 13, 2003 in Commerce, Georgia while attending the reunion of his high school graduating class. He was 63.
Mr. Hardman was a native of Commerce where he lived for most of his life and had business interests. The Hardman family has been long prominent in the business, civic and religious life of Jackson County, and Mr. Hardman had maintained that tradition. He was formerly head of Harmony Grove Mills, Inc. (now part of Mt. Vernon Mills) and was Chairman of nBank, formerly The First National Bank of Commerce. He was a member of the Athens City Club, Athens Country Club, The Piedmont Driving Club and an active volunteer with the Northeast Georgia Council, Boy Scouts of America. He also served as a director of both Georgia Power Company and the Southern Company and was formerly President of the Georgia Textile Manufacturers Association.
Mr. Hardman was devoted to his family and friends and served his community and church, having served as a Trustee of the Georgia Baptist Foundation. He was a member of The First Presbyterian Church of Athens. He was also an avid outdoorsman, loving and honoring the environment and wildlife, both as a hunter and as a steward of family lands. He and his family had a keen interest in preserving family property in Nacoochee, White County, Georgia and had recently donated the family home and surrounding acreage in Nacoochee Valley to the State of Georgia as part of the Georgia Heritage Trust program so that the property will be preserved and open to the public as an example of nineteenth century rural life in Northeast Georgia.
