Biography

Fanny Hare was born in 1861 at Barrow upon Humber, Lincolnshire, the daughter of William Hare and Ann Cooper.

In the 1861 census Fanny Ayre [sic] was living with her parents at West Marsh Road, Barrow on Humber. She was aged 2 months.

In 1871 the family was living at Haven Rd, Barrow on Humber. Fanny Hair [sic], aged 10, was attending school.

Fanny Hair [sic] married William Hewitt [Marriage Jun Qtr 1879/Glanford Brigg 7a 1436].

This couple had 10 children [1911 census]. Known children are William Hewitt [1879], Ann Hewitt [1881], Harriet Hewitt [1882], Emma Hewitt [1884], Clara Hewitt [1888], Fanny Cooper Hewitt [1890], Laura May Hewitt [15 July 1896] and granddaughter Dorothy Knott Hewitt [1899]. The latter was likely the daughter of Ann but raised by her grandparents.

In 1881 the family was living at West Acridge, Barton on Humber. William, aged 22, was working as a farm labourer. Fanny was aged 20 and children William and Ann were aged 1 and 2 months respectively. [RG11/3291 4 Pg 3]

In 1891 the family was still at the same address. William, aged 32, was then working as a labourer in a brickyard. Fanny was aged 30. William was aged 11, Ann aged 10, Harriett [sic] aged 8, Emma aged 6, Clara aged 3 and Fanny aged 11 months. [RG12/2630 6 Pg 6]

In 1901 the family was living at Ing Lane, Barton on Humber. William, aged 43, was still working as a brickyard labourer. Fanny was aged 41. William, aged 22, was working as a labourer at the chemical works. Clara was aged 13, Fanny aged 11 and Laura aged 5. Dorah [sic], aged 2 was stated to be a granddaughter. Also living with them was Fanny's father William Hare. A widower aged 71 years he was living on his own means. [RG13/3108 19 Pg 30]

Daughter Ann, aged 22, was working as a domestic servant for Henry E Hopper, a commercial traveller, and family at 139 Westbourne Ave, Sculcoates, Yorkshire. [RG13/4470 74 Pg 9]

Daughter Harriet, aged 18, was working as a domestic nurse in the home of George Nixon, a fur merchant, and family at 130 Burton Rd, Stockport, Cheshire. [RG13/3294 158 Pg 35]

Daughter Emma, aged 16 was working as a kitchen maid for Julia Holt, a widow, at Bardney Hall, Barton on Humber. [RG13/3108 87 Pg 9]

William Hewitt died aged 43 years [Death Jun Qtr 1902/Glanford B. 7a 419].

In 1911 Fannie [sic], aged 51, and the two younger children Laura, aged 14 and Dorothy, aged 11, were living at 65 Far Ings Lane, off Waterside Road, Barton on Humber. To provide income for the family there were four boarders living in their home named James Martin, Joseph Blood, James Knight and Charles Jowitt. All were single and working in the brick trade.

Fanny Hewitt died aged 70 years [Death Mar Qtr 1931/Glanford B. 7a 965].

From 1931 Index of Wills and Administrations – HEWITT Fanny of 65 Ings-road Barton-on-Humber Lincolnshire widow died 8 March 1931 Administration London 22 June to William Hewitt cowkeeper. Effects £613 7s. 6d.
