Biography

Harriet Hargrave was born in 1841 in Ripon, Yorkshire, England, United Kingdom. She was the daughter of John Hargrave, saddler, and Fanny Pybus.^[1] Harriet was baptised on 17 February 1841at their parish church in Ripon.^[2]

In the 1841 census Harriet (age 0) was living with her parents & siblings in Ripon, Yorkshire, England.^[3]

In the 1851 census Harriett (age 10) was the daughter of John Hargrave in , Ripon, Yorkshire, England. She was a scholar and her father was a saddler.^[4]

When Harriet was about 18 years old (underage) she married George Hammond (born in 1831 in Ripon; son of Elizabeth (Dollow) Hammond). Their marriage was registered in the 4th quarter of 1859 in Rochdale, Lancashire. No church record has been located, and because they married outside their county it's possible they married without her parents' consent (he was much older at 28 years of age). They may have been married at the registry office.^[5][6] Together they had 7 children before his death.

In the 1861 census Harriet (age 24) was the sons wife of Elizabeth Hammond in Ripon, Yorkshire, England. Her mohter-in-law was a farmer of 100 acres. Her first child, Anthony, was 5 months old. Also in the home were 2 young nephews and a servant (carter).^[18]

In the 1871 census Harriet (age 30) was the wife of George Hammond in Galphay, Yorkshire, England. Her husband was a miller and farmer.^[19]

In the 1881 census Harriett (age 40) was the widowed head of household in North Stainley With Sleningford, Yorkshire, England. She was a farmer of 109 acres employing 1 man living with her mother-in-law Elizabeth (age 85) and four children ages 6 through 28, as well as her farm servant, Jonathan Holdsworth, who worked indoors. The two youngest children, Mary Jane & Reuben, were attending school.^[20]

Following her husband's death Harriet, child of John Hargreave, married George Steed, a widower, on 12 March 1884 in Menston with Woodhead, St John the Divine, Yorkshire, England.^[21][22]

In the 1891 census Harriet (age 50) was the wife of George Steed in Marsden, Lancashire, England. Her husband was a Gas Stoker. They lived as a blended family with three of her children, two of his, and 5 borders.^[23]

Harriet Steed (age 52) died in Great Marsden, Lancashire, England.^[24] She was buried on March 2, 1893 in Great Marsden, St John the Evangelist, Lancashire, England.^[25]
