Ballard Van Buren Harman (see research note re: Middle Name) was born about 1835 (see research note re: Birth Year) in Tazewell County, Virginia to Daniel Camel Harman and Margaret Gillespie[1][2]. In the 1850 U.S. Federal Census, Ballard lived with his parents and several siblings in Tazewell County, Virginia[3].
In the 1860 U.S. Federal Census, Ballard lived in Tazewell County, Virginia, in the household of his sister Jane, and her husband William Peery[4].
On 29 May 1861 in Wytheville, Wythe County Virginia, Ballard enlisted into the Confederate Army, with rank of Private, in Company H, 45th Regiment, Virginia Infantry. On 1 April 1864, Ballard continued to serve with Company H, but with rank of Sergeant. In June 1864, probably in the Battle of Piedmont, Ballard lost a portion of one leg[5][6].
In the 1870 U.S. Federal Census, Ballard lived in Tazewell County, Virginia. He lived with his brother John, and John's wife and children[7]. In the 1880 U.S. Federal Census, Ballard continued to live in Tazewell County, Virginia, with his brother John[8].
On 4 May 1892 in Tazewell County, Virginia, Ballard married Rhoda Louisa Gillespie. Rhoda was born 29 August 1869 in Laurel Branch, McDowell County, West Virginia to Henry Harman Gillespie and Saluda Raines[1][9]. Ballard and Rhoda were related to each other via at least two paths:
Neither Ballard nor his wife, Rhoda, have been found in the 1920 or 1930 U.S. Federal Censuses. While Rhoda lived until 1935[9], neither a record of Ballard's death, nor evidence of a burial have yet been documented (see research note re: Death).
Research Notes
Middle Name
When records do indicate some form of middle initial or name for Ballard, it is one of three forms:
The 1900 Census indicated that Ballard was born in May 1835[10]. Ballard's application for a Disabled Confederate Soldier Pension indicated he was 74 years old, and was signed in April 1910[6]. Assuming that his birth month was May, then the age he gave on his pension application would also indicate that he was born in 1835 (he was 74 years old when he signed, and would turn 75 years old the next month in May 1910).
Children
The publication "Harman Genealogy (southern branch) with biographical sketches, 1700 - 1924" indicates that Ballard and Rhoda were the parents of eight children[2]:
Ollie
Venia
Sallie
Rebecca
Alice
John
Henry
Mary
The 1910 U.S. Federal Census indicates that Rhoda was the mother of seven children (all still living in 1910, and only daughter Martha Louvenia was not in their household at that time)[12]. Unfortunately the list of children published in "Harman Genealogy" probably includes an extra comma, between the names John and Henry. Instead of one son named "John Henry Harman", that publication indicates that there are two sons, one named "John Harman" and another named "Henry Harman".
