Martin was born in Ballinasloe, Ireland on 5 Nov 1864, the son of Michael Harney and Ann (Graham). The family immigrated to the U.S. about 1870, settling in Lynn, MA. Martin B. married Jane A. Martin in 1895 in Lynn. She is the daughter of James Martin and Rose (Rafferty), and is the older sister to Mary A. Martin, who married Martin B Harney’s first cousin, Joseph F. Harney.
Martin B., a foreman at a shoe factory, and Jane had two sons who both became distinguished priests:
Martin P. Harney (1896-1976), the history professor and Jesuit at Boston College; and
James Michael Harney (1898-1963), who spent years as a missionary in Jamaica and was associated with the Jesuit Missions’ Boston office.
