When Mary Harrington was born on August 24, 1856, in Oatlands, Tasmania, Australia [1], her father, Timothy, was 32, and her mother, Bridget, was 23. Mary was the only child of Timothy and Bridget and was born with a club foot (Her father died in an accident the following year).
When her father Timothy died 1857 her mother Bridget remarried David Baker, and moved to Victoria. She left Mary behind in the hands of the catholic church and sent for her much later. So Mary relocated to Victoria.
About 1868 onward, Mary gains mention in Melbourne newspapers in various unseemly ways (unruly teen years? running away from home, Gaining goods by deception, etc.).
Mary married James Beattie 1877 at Victoria[2]. and had 7 children.
Children of James Beattie & Mary Harrington
Married James Rowe... She also had three sons from another relationship (second marriage).
She died in 1936 in Stawell, Victoria, at the age of 80 years.[3] Her remains were buried in the Navarre cemetery as Mary Rowe. After the death of husband James, she became Mary Rowe in 1914. Married James Rowe of the Stawell area.
Mary's Father (Timothy) was a convict sent to Tas. It's possible that her mother was as well. She was noted as housekeeper on their marriage certificate.
