Biography

On James's baptism his father is recorded as Driver, Royal Artillery.

1841 Census at Union Yard, Chelmsford, there are James and Hannah, both 25. With them are Martha 3 and Charles 18 months old. James is an Ag labourer.

1851 Census at 39 Broomfield Road is Hannah Harris 36 brickmaker's wife, born at Broomfield. Home with her are Martha 12, Charles 10, George 5, and James 2. The widow Anne Rolfe is a lodger with her. [At 41 Broomfield Road are the family of James and Jane Harris.] The two preceeding dwellings were also occupied by Harris families. 37 Broomfield Road by Jonas Harris 31, a Baker born Lt Waltham with wife Sarah 36, and children William 5, Elizabeth 1 born Chelmsford, and niece Eliza 8, born Lambeth Surrey. 38 Broomfield Road, William Harris 37, born Broomfield, an Ag. Labourer, wife Caroline 34 and children William 11, George 8, Ellen 7 and Sarah 2 all born Chelmsford.

1861 Census at 97 Compass Row, Chelmsford is James Harris 47, born Ringmore, Sussex, a brick maker labourer, Martha daughter 23 housekeeper, George 16, James 12, William 9, Thomas 7, Matilda 3, and Mark, 11 months a grandson, all children born at Chelsmford. [2 doors away from Jane Harris and Charlotte Hutchinson] The June Qtr 1860 birth registration has Mark Harris at Chelmsford. Deaths Jun 1862 Harris Mark Chelmsford 4a 87 1881 Census James born 1814 in Ringmoor, Sussex is at the Chelmsford Union Workhouse Moulsham. He is a widower and a brickmaker. Also in the workhouse Charles Harris 43 Springfield, Essex, England Isaac Harris 70 Little Waltham, Essex, England
