Biography

Joel Harris was born about 1720 in Isle of Wight, Virginia, the son of Edward Harris and Mary Thorpe.

Excerpt from the Five Thomas Harrises of Isle of Wight County, VA P. 36 A complicated and lengthy chancery suit in Southampton Co., VA, among the children and grandchildren of Joel Harris appeared in The Southside Virginian vol 6 no. 2 (April 1988), pp. 70-71. The mention of grandchildren of Priscilla Harris (a name carried down in this family) and Olive Harris (who married "Joseph" Harris) in the will of Mrs. Mary(Thorpe) Harris-Myrick has led me to believe that a scribal error was made in the transcription of the will. Most likely "Joseph" Harris is an error for (No. 10) Joshua 5 Harris, the son of (No.4) Joshua 4 Harris Sr., (Thomas 3) Edward 2-1) of chapter Four, who married Olive, no doubt this Olive5 Harris. According to the chancery suit, dated 1829.
