Biography

Known as Gene to most of his relatives, and "Budgene" to his sister Ethel (known as "Sister"), Pappy to his grandchildren and Daddy to his daughter and son.

Gene Hart was self-educated and worked with the railroads most of his life. He was born during a very troubled time in the South, yet did his utmost to raise his daughter without racial prejudice. He carried a dictionary with him as he had not been educated, and learned more as he went. He studied in Philadelphia as a boilermaker and then went to the Rocky Mount, NC center for Atlantic Coast Line railroad where he eventually was the head of the entire national department. He took courses at the YMCA in Law, and he was sent as a representative to Chicago to work against the unions in the railroads. He became head of the rolling stock of Atlantic Coast Line Railroad before he retired. He worked as an arbitrator against the unions that would disrupt the work of the railroad.

When mother was in college, Pappy and Mammy moved from Rocky Mount to Wilmington, NC.

He and his wife Georgia were Southern Baptists. They lived in Wilmington, NC for many years where they belonged to the Wrightsville Beach Country Club.

They lived in Manchester, Georgia, for more than 30 years and all the families used to visit them there.

They eventually retired to Orlando, Florida to be close to their son, Eugene Hart (also called Gene). Pappy died in 1975 while his daughter was in Brazil, the only time they did not keep closely in touch.
