Richard Hartley was born in Yorkshire, England.

Richard was born in 1824, He was the son of John Hartley and Rachel Riley, and was baptised on 29 February 1824 at Sion Chapel Wade Street-Independent, Halifax. Date of birth given as 8 December 1823. His father was a Weaver and the family were living in Warley, Halifax.^{[1] [2]}

Richard was buried on 8 December 1824 in Illingworth, St Mary, Yorkshire, England. Abode given as Warley. ^[3][4]
