Biography

George was born between November 1872 and March 1873 in Felmersham, Bedfordshire, England. He was the son of John Hartwell and Charlotte Lavinia (Turner) Hartwell. He gives his birthplace as Turvey in other settings - but this is his mother's birthplace, just a couple of miles up the road past Carlton Uncle's name is Eli too.[1][2]

In the 1881 census George (age 8) was living in Turvey, Bedfordshire, England.[2]

In 1890 George (age about 16) was living in England, United Kingdom. Royal Artillery Number 77654[3]

In 1890 George (age about 16) was employed as a Soldier - Rank Gunner - Woolwich , Hyderabad, Karachi, South Africa - up to 1902 in Various.

Injury: 1896 in Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan. Elbow Injured in a dispute with natives when off duty

Discharge from the Colours: 1902. After serving in South Africa 1899 - received Kings Medal with Clasps

When George was 33 he married Iris Lilian Wooding on 24 February 1906 in Bedfordshire, England. The couple had 3 children: Edith Beta Hartwell, Gladys Mary Hartwell and Cyril John H Hartwell. Note that his Brother marries her sister as well[4][5][6]

On 24 February 1906 George (age 33) was living in England.[7]

In the 1911 census George (age 38) was living in Turvey, Bedfordshire, England. Gamekeeper "George"[8]

In 1914 George (age about 40) was living in England, United Kingdom. Labourer - Mill Lane Turvey - 7724 Number Bedfordshire Reservist[9]

Military Service: 1917 in Flanders, Belgium. Gunshot - wounded in Action - also had a Dancing Girl tattoo on re-enlistment

George died at the age of 70 in March 1943 in Bedford, Bedfordshire, England.[10]
