Biography

Harriet Anne Reid (known as Dolly) was born on 13 July 1876[1] in New Zealand, and her birth was registered at Ōtaki[2]. She was the first daughter of James Harvey and Harriet Welch. She was named for her mother's mother Anne Read Welch but the Read is spelt incorrectly in the record.

She passed examinations in drawing[3] in 1891 and music[4] in 1892. She passed her first year pupil teacher examination in 1893[5] for Masterton Infants and her second year in 1895[6].

She married William Evan Davies on 2 January 1905[7] at her father's home at Woodville[8][9]. The couple left immediately after the ceremony for New Plymouth. Evan and Harriet had three daughters.

  3. Gywneth Lorraine (1912[14] - 1986[15])

In 1905 she and her husband, a draper's assistant, were living in Woodville, both being registered on the Pahiatua Electoral Roll[16]. Evan now a draper and Harriet had moved to Pongaroa by 1911, both being on the Masterton Electoral Roll[17].

They remained in Pongaroa through until the mid 1940s when Evan retired and they moved to 24 Matamau Street, Palmerston North, changing in 1946 to the Manawatu General Electoral Roll[18].

Her husband Evan died on 3 July 1954[19]. Dolly was still at the same address in 1954[20].

Dolly died on 5 April 1956[21] aged 79 years old at Palmerston North. She was buried at Kelvin Grove Cemetery[22] with her husband. Her probate was granted at Palmerston North[23]. She left her estate to her children.
