Biography
10 February 1838 Nelson Freeman Hathaway was born in Medford, Middlesex, Massachusetts, son of Noah D. Hathaway and Hannah Maria Read.[1]
In the September 1850 census Nelson age 12 was in Medford, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States. The Hathaway household consisted of Noah age 40, Hannah age 39, and 14 children ages 1 to 19 years old. Noah was a carpenter. They were all born in Massachusetts. [2]
In the September 1855 census Nelson age 16 was in Medford, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States. The Hathaway household included Noah age 46, Hannah age 44, and 13 children from age 6 months to 20 years. Noah and sons Gustavus age 20 and Nelson F age 16 were shipwrights. [3]
19 August 1862 Nelson F Hathaway (age 23), the son of Noah and Hannah, married Hannah F Prince (age 20), the daughter of Benjamin and Mary, in Saugus, Essex, Massachusetts, United States. Nelson was a shipwright. They were both living in Medford. Hannah was born in Hampden, Maine. It was the first marriage for both of them.[4]
17 May 1869 Nelson F Hathaway, the son of Noah Hathaway and Hannah M. Hathaway, married Zilph J. Allen, daughter of John Allen and Betsey P. Allen, in Sheboygan Falls, Sheboygan, Wisconsin, United States.[5]
In the June 1880 census Nelson age 41 was with his wife Zilpha age 33 and daughter Nettie age 8 in Concord, Merrimack, New Hampshire, United States. He worked for a butcher.[6]
In the 1900 census Nelson (age 61, born Feb 1839) was with his wife Zilpah (age 52, born Jan 1848 in Maine) and daughter Cynthia P M Hathaway (age 11, born Mar 1889 in Massachusetts). Nelson was a meat cutter and owned their house at 14 Willow St. in Malden, Middlesex, Massachusetts, United States. They had been married 30 years and both of their children were still living.[7]
Nelson received an Army Invalid pension from 8 April 1907 until his death March 10, 1922.[8]
In the May 1910 census Nelson age 72, Zilpher age 62, and unmarried 21 year old daughter Cynthia in Duxbury, Plymouth, Massachusetts, United States. They had been married 40 years and had two daughters. He owned his home on Station St. and had his own income.[9]
25 July 1912 Nelson’s wife Zilpha Janette Allyn Hathaway died at home on Station St, Duxbury, Massachusetts. 27 July 1912 she was buried in Mayflower Cemetery in Duxbury. She was born 12 January 1848 in North Brooklin, Hancock, Maine to parents John Allyn and Betsy P Driscoll who were both born in Maine. The cause of death was cancer of the stomach. Zilpha’s daughter Mrs. Howes (Nettie) was the informant.
In the January 1920 census Nelsen age 81 was still in Duxbury. His married daughter Blanche U Hall (Nettie) age 47 and her second husband Fred Hall age 51 were also in the household. Nelson wasn’t working. Fred was a carpenter building boats.[10]
Nelson was buried in Mayflower Cemetery, Duxbury, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States with a death date of 10 March 1922.[11]
