Biography

Clifton was born to Hugh Hawes & Mary Jane Prest. His family moved from Nova Scotia to New Brunswick where his two younger sisters were subsequently born. His uncle's family had also made the move and were living nearby. However, sometime before 1901 something happened that resulted in him and his sisters returning to Nova Scotia, apparently without either of their parents. He was adopted by his uncle, and his sisters went to live with their maternal grandfather in Spry Bay. The fate of Clifton's parents is not known.

In 1918 he was living at 1 Mt. Vernon in Gloucester, Massachusetts, either with his cousin's (adopted-brother's) family or maybe next door. He was described as medium height and build, with blue eyes and light brown hair. He was working as a fisherman for Gorton-Pew Fisheries Company, located on 329 Main in Gloucester.
