Obadiah Hawes is mentioned as son of Richard and Anne _____ Hawes[1], married by 1632. Obadiah bp. Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire, 25 March 1635; m. (1) by 1663 Mary Humphrey (their eldest known child was born in Dorchester on 20 August 1663), daughter of James Humpghrey [Hawes Gen 26]; m. (2) by 7 October 1678 Sarah (_____) Holmes, widow of John Holmes [Hawes Gen 26-27].[2]
Obadiah married about 1662 Mary Humphrey.[3] She died on April 21, 1676,[4] leaving Obadiah with at least five children under the age of thirteen.
A year later, possibly in anticipation of his second marriage, he either built a new home or enlarged the old one, for on March 12, 1676/7 he was granted by the town the right to obtain 1400 clapboards.[5]
He married second in his early 40s sometime prior to October of 1678 widow Sarah (___) Holmes. Her husband John Holmes had died on May 17, 1676,[6] leaving her with five children under the age of thirteen: John, Sarah, Mary, George and Samuel Holmes.[7] So, lots of children in the combined household.
Obadiah was active in town affairs. He served as town constable and taker of the tithes. He also helped run the line between Roxbury and Dorchester and lay out town roads.[8]
He was moderately well-off. The inventory of his real and personal estate at the time of his death totaled £384. The dwelling house and lot were valued at £105 and his other tracts of land at £175.[[9]
Obadiah Hawes died on October 5,1690, at age 55, without leaving a will, and was buried “in the yard at Uphams Corner, where the ancient stone is still standing [1932]".[10] "Here lies buried ye body of Obadiah Haws, age 56 years, died Oct ye 5th 1690.”[11] The court appointed his son Obadiah Jr. administrator, and Hopestill Humphrey and Ebenezer Withington served as fellow bondsmen. The inventory of the estate was taken on November 14, 1690.[12]
