Biography
Persis may be the daughter of Noah Hawley Persis married Elkanah Crosby after his wife died in 1828. Elkanah lived in Lyons, New York around 1820.[1] [2]Their children were:
- I. Joseph Beard Crosby 1832–1914
- 2. Zilpha Crosby 1834–1913
- 3. Sarah Jeannette Crosby 1836
- 4. Hiram W. Crosby1839–1919
They moved to Chautauqua, New York before 1930[3] and to Cherry Valley, Ashtabula, Ohio before 1840.[4] She lived there [5] until her death in 1882.[6] She is buried in Cherry Valley Township, Ashtabula, Ohio.[7]

None of any of the sources I can find make any mention of Persis Hawley to any relation with the Samuel Hawley family. Her tombstone does show that her birth was in 1793. The fact that she was born in Massachesetts comes from a vague Massachusetts Town Record that does not show her name but does show the birth we associate with her. This same record would indicate that her father was Noah Hawley.The fact that all of the children of Samuel Hawley were born in Fairfield Connecticut and she was born in Massachusetts further makes her relation to the Samuel Hawley family suspect.
