James Hawthorne, son of William and Hannah (Bigham) Hawthorne, was born January 20, 1788 in Pennsylvania.
He "settled in Harrison County, Ohio before 1819, where he died in 1844; two of his brothers settled in Jefferson County, Ohio. James Hawthorne married Rosanna Stewart, daughter of Robert Stewart. They had issue: 1. Hannah, M. ______ McIlroy and settled in Washington County, Iowa; 2. Margaret-Ann, m. John McNary, and settled near New Athens, Harrison county; 3. Nancy-Jane; 4. Arabella, d. aged twelve years; 5. Robert-Creighton, b. Oct. 5, 1819; removed to Muskingum county, Ohio in 1861 where he d. 1864, m. 1842 to Margaret J. Grove, b. in York county, Penn. August 26, 1817, daughter of Francis and Jeanette Grove (had issue: i. Arthur-Allison b. Feb 27, 1845; m. Jan 3, 1878 Jane Eliza Maxwell, a native of Jefferson county, daughter of Samuel and Isabella McMillan Maxwell; ii. Francis-Grove, b. Jan. 25, 1847; iii. Emily-Arabella, b. Oct. 20, 1849; m. James Holmes; settled in Greene county, Ohio; iv. James-Stewart, b. Aug. 2, 1852; settled in Adena, Jefferson county); 6. Samuel-E.; 6. William; 8, Rosanna."[1]
