The Hawthorne Dominicans, which she founded operate several homes in Atlanta, GA and Philadelphia, PA as well as Rosary Hill Home in Hawthorne, NY which provides terminal care 24/7 to patients with terminal cancer, accepting no payment from either the patients or their families.

Rose's son died of cancer at age of five. She and her spouse had an apparently unhappy marriage, The were divorced shortly after the death of their son although both had converted to Roman Catholicism during their marriage. Rose then became a Dominican nun.
As a Dominican she was known as Mother Mary Alfonse.
She founded the Dominican Congregation of St. Rose of Lima, later called the Servants of Relief for Incurable Cancer and is currently a candidate for sainthood.
