Heather was born in 1971. She was the daughter of Derek Hawthorne and Margarette Chamberlain. In 1971 the family were living at 390 Firmount Drive in Antrim Town and moved to 11 Carwood Way Newtownabbey in 1975. Heather left home on 3rd Oct 1990 to go to Glasgow University. After studying there for a few years she got the opportunity to join Strathclyde Police where she remained until her death in 2004. She died as the result of a bleeding stomach ulcer. Heather seperated from Kim in 2002 and went back to her maiden name Hawthorne. They had lived at 48 Anchor Avenue in Paisley, Scotland. When they seperated, Heather remained in the house in Anchor Ave where she died. On her death over 50 of her police colleagues came over to attend her Funeral in Newtownabbey, Northern Ireland. Around 1983, we had the old style telephone with a dial. Heather, in those days was never off the phone, so I put a lock on the dial to cut down on the phone bills. A few days later I received a phone call, from Heather. I asked her "how are you able to phone me when I have a lock fitted" She replied wtth laughter, " I PICKED THE LOCK"

My memory of Heather was of 3 Oct 1990. When Heather was going to Scotland for her first attendance at Glasgow University. She was so pleased to be going to University. When I arrived home Heather had left a letter for me in the kitchen.

Dear Dad, I hope this finds you safely home and the car in a decent state. I just want to say a big "Thank You", I couldn't have managed to get this far without you. Remember, I'm not, and never will move away from you, I'm just moving on like I knew I always would. Even though I'm fussy, OK, I'm very fussy, I still love you and I will miss you, a lot. It won't be long to Christmas, until then, keep that till a dinging ( I had a shop, Funderworld) and take care of yourself and the "brats!" (scored out) boys. Dont forget "Tina, (our dog). Lots of love Heather xxx God Bless I MUST HAVE CRIED A MILLION TEARS OVER THAT LETTER, and the tears are tripping me now as I type this out. I had the letter framed and it still hangs proudly in the house.
