Biography

William Edgar was the son of William Henry Hayes (1837-1898) and Elizabeth Bell (1847-1921), both of Ontario, Canada. He was born on 14 April 1879 in Pickering of Durham in Ontario, Canada.[1] He and his two sisters grew up in Reach township of York county in Ontario.[2] His father died in 1898. He was living with his sister, Josephine, in Toronto in 1901.[3] His mother is living with him in 1911 at Strathcona, Alberta.[4] The 1911 census shows that he is a member of the Church of England, but previous census records show that he belonged to the Methodist Church.

William married Delilah Effiline Lake (1892-1973) on 7 October 1914 in her hometown of Holden in Beaver county, Alberta. They had two daughters; Muriel and Dorothy. They were living in Alberta in 1916, but the census transcription is not more specific.[5]

He worked as a druggist. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, sitting with the governing Social Credit caucus from 1935 until his death in 1939. Hayes died on April 2, 1939 from a reported heart seizure late into his first term in office at his home in Stony Plain, Alberta.[6]

William was buried in the Edmonton Municipal Cemetery.[7] Stony Plain is west of Edmonton and both are located in Parkland county.
