Biography

Sarah Hayes, child of Thos Hayes and Elizth Hayes, was baptised on 5 January 1794 in Wroxton, Oxfordshire, England.^[1]

Sarah Hayes married John Anscombe on 31 December 1818 at Chailey St Peter, Chailey, Sussex, England.^[2] The witnesses to the marriage were Robert JONES and John BROOKS.

Date and place of birth, Parents

• The marriage to John Anscombe does not provide Sarah's age or parents, but states she is 'of this parish'.
• The 1841 Census indicates that she was not born in Sussex and provides a range for her birth date of 1792-1796
• The 1851 and 1861 Census both state that she was born in Wroxton, Oxfordshire and indicate a date of 1795.
• The Parish Registers for Oxfordshire provide a single entry for Sarah Hayes born Wroxton, baptised 5 Jan 1794 to parents Thomas and Elizabeth Hayes.

Marriage

The date of marriage, 31 December 1818, is consistent with the baptism of Maria Anscombe on 19 September 1819 being John and Sarah's first child. The record states that they were married with consent of parents, which if handwritten would suggest they were under the age of 21, but this phrase occurs in a pre-printed form and is present for every entry so it is not possible to draw any conclusions about the couple’s ages. The record does not provide ages, or the names of parents of either of the couple.

John and Sarah were both able to sign their signatures. John BROOKS, one of the witnesses to the marriage, also appears on other marriage entries, so may be a churchwarden or clerk.
