Marriage Registration:
Samuel Bentley of this Parish, Batchelor, and Johanna Hayes of this Parish, Spinster, were married in this Church by License with consent of Robert Hayes, Brother of Johanna this 25th day of February in the year 1839, by me, John Couch Gryllis, Chaplain. This marriage was solemnized between us, Samuel Bentley (signature) and Johanna Hayes (her X mark) in the presence of Ellen Sunter and Robert Hayes, both of Melbourne. [transcript from church registry]
Was Robert her brother? or her brother-in-law, husband of Margaret with whom she arrived in Australia (see immigration papers).
The son of a great aunt of mine (who was Isabella Bellamy's granddaughter) told me many years ago that Isabella's mother was married at the age of 16 which is correct - but to a French Minister as a debt! All the other info he gave me has been correct. Neither I nor anyone else has been able to prove it but he said his mother was told it by her mother Lucy Rebecca Rumble. (Lynette Jordan)
It's quite possible she was "sold" for a debt, as the book "Women of Victorian Hastings" describes the practice of wife-selling. Women were the property of their husband, just as the children were, so the practice, although not publicly condoned, was tolerated. It is possible that daughters were also "sold" under an agreement. That certainly was the practice earlier in time. If she was previously married in Ireland or on the way over (sometimes marriages happened quickly before shipping out or on the ship), it will be more difficult to track that down (esp. if her maiden name was not Hayes).
