An overview of John's life can be seen in this article from the Otago Witness, on the occasion of John and Eliza's Golden Wedding: [1]
Mr John Hayward and Mrs Hayward celebrated their golden wedding at their residence, Roslyn, on January 13. Their sons and daughters came from all parts to join in the festivities. Mr and Mrs Hayward are well known in Dunedin, especially in the Roslyn District, where they have resided for about 30 years, they having arrived in the Dominion in the ship Oamaru on January I8, 1877. Mr John Hayward, who is 75 years of age, is in the employ of Messrs Ross and Glendining, having joined that firm about 25 years ago. Their sons are Mr E. B. Hayward (Hayward and Garratt. Stuart street), Mr W. G. Hayward (Dunedin manager for Messrs E. W. Pidgeon and' Co., Ltd.), Mr James B. Hayward (employed in Carey's, Christchurch). Mr John B. Hayward (Fraser's. Ltd., Christ-church), Mr A. H. Hayward (residing in Balclutha). Their several daughters are married to Mr D. M'Millan, Mr C. Grant, Mr R. Armit, all of Dunedin, the youngest daughter being unmarried. The old couple received numerous congratulations by telegraphy and otherwise, and among the numerous presents were a purse of sovereigns from the children, a pair of handsome armchairs in saddlebags from the staff of Messrs Ross and Glendening, a very handsome eiderdown quilt, from Mr and Mrs J. A. D. Adams, besides numerous other presents from friends in Dunedin and other parts of the Dominion. A valuable present also arrived by the English mail on the morning of the wedding. The only guests present not members of the family were the Rev. Mr Hobday and Mr A. S. Adams.
John was born in 1837, in Newington, Surrey (London), son of John Hayward, a silversmith, and Anne Hayward (nee Maisey), a stationer. [2]
At age 13, John was a clerk to an architect. [3]
In 1860, John was a jeweller, and he married Eliza Emma Parsons. [4]
In 1861, John, wife Eliza and infant son Edward were living in the same house as John's sister Elizabeth at 9 Martha Terrace Newington. [5]
John and Eliza had 10 children over the next 15 years, two died in childhood. At the end of 1876, the family immigrated to New Zealand, arriving on 18 January, 1877 on the ship Oamaru. They settled in Dunedin. John found work as a storeman and later a warehouseman, working for the firm Messrs Ross and Glendining from around 1885.
They had daughter Lydia in 1882. They initially lived in central Dunedin, moving to the Roslyn area in 1891, where John and Eliza stayed. John was very involved in the Roslyn Baptist Church, as can be seen from the newspaper article below, published following his death.
John passed away in 1911. [6] He is buried in Anderson's Bay Cemetery and the details can be seen here.
The newspaper reported on his memorial service: "A large audience assembled in the Roslyn Baptist Church on Sunday evening to honour the memory of the late Mr John Hayward, of Clyde street, Roslyn, who passed away, after a short, sharp illness, on Monday, March 27, at the age of seventy-three. Mr Hayward had been led to religious seriousness at a mission service conducted by the Rev. Thomas Spurgeon in 1892. He became one of the foundation members of the Roslyn Church when it was constituted a separate church in 1896, and remained loyal to it throughout its chequered history. He taught in the Sunday school, presided over the Christian Endeavour Society, held the office of deacon and treasurer, attended the services with unfailing regularity, and by the uniform consistency of his life won the esteem of his fellow-members. His sudden removal has impoverished the Church, but has left it the memory of a good and faithful man to cherish and emulate.... The preacher paid a high tribute to the character of the departed, who had left a legacy to his family and friends which was better than gold. Appropriate hymns were sung, and at the close of the service the orchestra played the Dead March in ' Saul,' while the congregation stood in reverent silence. [7]
