Biography

This person is an ancestor of President Millard Fillmore[1]
Isabel was born July 21, 1662 in Rowley, Essex, Massachusetts to Edward Hazen (1614-1683) and Hannah Grant (1631-1715).[2] Isabel’s father, Edward, was “…one of the original settlers of the town of Rowley, who came from Yorkshire, England, with Ezekiel Rodgers in 1638. He is frequently mentioned in the early records of Rowley, and was a man of substance and influence in the town.” [3]
On January 16, 1680/1, Isabel married John Wood (1656-1735), son of Thomas Wood and Ann Hunt, in Rowley, Essex, Massachusetts.[4]
The children of John Wood and Isabell Hazen are:
  1. Hannah Wood born January 20, 1681/2, in Rowley, Essex, Massachusetts;[5]died March 03, 1732, in Bradford, Essex, Massachusetts.[6] It is important to note that Hannah has two conflicting birth dates in different sources. Tracy Elliot Hazen, author of "The Hazen Family in America," states on page 31: "Hannah, b. 12 Jan 1681/2, bap. 22 Jan. 1681/2..." The Records of Births, Deaths and Marriages for Ipswich Court’s Jurisdict: 1654 to 1681 copied by Alfred Kimball, 1858, page 51 states: "Hannah, daughter of John Wood borne the 20th of January 1681.” She married James Bailey.
  2. John Wood born February 13, 1683/4, in Bradford, Essex, Massachusetts; [7] died February 13, 1753, in Littleton, Middlesex, Massachusetts. [8] John also has conflicting birth dates in different sources. "Massachusetts Births and Christenings, 1639-1915" states a birth date February 14, 1683, but other secondary sources such as “The Hazen Family in America” by Tracy Elliot Hazen and “Early Settlers in Rowley” by George Blodgett indicate a birth date of February 13, 1683. He married Sarah Kimball.
  3. Priscilla Wood born August 27, 1687, in Bradford, Essex, Massachusetts;[9] died in 1721 in Rowley, Essex, Massachusetts (after the birth of her last child and before the remarriage of her husband). She married Daniel Tenney.
  4. Edward Wood born September 07, 1689 in Bradford, Essex, Massachusetts; [10] died December 28, 1762, in Bradford, Essex, Massachusetts. [11] He married Mary Spofford.
  5. Thomas Wood born October 28, 1691, in Bradford, Essex, Massachusetts;[12] died after 22 January 1764, in Norwich, New London, Connecticut.[13] It is important to note that Thomas has conflicting birth dates in different sources. The hand-written version of "Massachusetts, Town Clerk and Town Records, 1626-2001, Bradford Births" reads: "Tho. son of John and Isabell Wood, 28 Oct. 1691." The printed version of "Massachusetts, U. S. Town and Vital Records, Bradford Births" (page 171), however, reads: "Thomas, s. John and Isabel, Nov. 28, 1691." Tracy Elliot Hazen, author of "The Hazen Family in America," states on page 32: "Thomas, b. 28 Nov. 1691….“ George Blodgett, author of "The Early Settlers of Rowley, Massachusetts" acknowledges this discrepancy with an included notation: "Thomas, b. 28 November 1691 (28 Oct. Ct. R.)"[14]
  6. Samuel Wood born November 18, 1693, in Bradford, Essex, Massachusetts;[15] died unknown. (The Samuel Wood that married Ruth Kimball was the son of Edward Wood and Mary Spofford and a nephew of this Samuel.)
  7. Joseph Wood born May 05, 1696, in Bradford, Essex, Massachusetts;[16]died February 17, 1776, in Windham, Connecticut. [17]Tracy Elliot Hazen, author of "The Hazen Family in America," however, indicates the Joseph died at Windham on 7 February 1766. He married Hannah Carrier.
  8. Ebenezer Wood born September 08, 1698, in Bradford, Essex, Massachusetts;[18] died 1744, in Norwich, New London, Connecticut. He married Mary Rudd.
  9. Abigail Annie Wood born December 14, 1700, in Bradford, Essex, Massachusetts;[19]died unknown. She married Joseph Tenney.
  10. Bethia Wood born January 19, 1702/03, in Bradford, Essex, Massachusetts;[20] died April 03, 1769, in Salisbury, Massachusetts.[21] She married Jabez Bingham.
  11. Richard Wood born January 30, 1705/6, in Bradford, Essex, Massachusetts;[22] died January 20, 1790, in Thetford, Orange, Vermont.[23] He married Sarah Rolfe.
  12. Josiah Wood born April 05, 1708, in Bradford, Essex, Massachusetts;[24] died Aft. 1767 in unknown place. He married Eleanor Barrett.
“The Hazen Family in America” by Tracy Elliot Hazen states: “John and Isabel Wood settled soon in Bradford, Mass., and lived there for many years. On 22 Aug. 1726, they sold their land there to Robert Savory, and followed their eldest son to Littleton, Mass. where John Wood had bought a farm, 11 May 1726. This farm was 160 acres with buildings thereon…”[25]
The only proven information about Isabel’s death is that she died after 1726 in Littleton, Middlesex, Massachusetts. No death record has been found.

Misattributed Child

Many trees have misattributed another child, also named John, born in 1680 in Rowley, to this couple. However, no John Wood, born in 1680, appears in the Rowley Births. Additionally, this John would have been born before John and Isabel’s marriage. The confusion apparently stems from Rowley Church records that include the following entry: “Goodman Wood of ye Village son John, June 20 (1680).“ George B. Blodgett author of Early Settlers of Rowley, Massachusetts added a notation that “perhaps he [John of Rowley] was son of Daniel Wood of Boxford.”[14]

The first "John Wood" attributed as a son of this couple is bogus and should be removed. The entry represents a mistake Blodgette made when he attributed to John & Isabel the John Wood who was born in Topsfield 25 March 1680; also recorded in Boxford but with less detail.) That blunder has been repeated a thousand times and propagated more recently across the internet, but it's a total lie.

There is no record of the birth of any such John Wood in Rowley. In reality, that John Wood was the child of Daniel & Sarah Wood, who had a large family (some born in Topsfield and others at Boxford). John & Isabel Wood they never lived in Boxford, and in fact the Woods of Boxford are completely unrelated.

I resent the suggestion that my honored 7th great grandparents had a bastard child shortly before their marriage (their actual marriage date on the Gregorian calendar would be January of 1681), who supposedly died within two years. In fact John Wood of Topsfield / Boxford was legitimate (albeit the son of other people) and survived until 1759.
