Biography

Birth and Parentage

Hylda Madeleine Heath was born on 3 July 1882, to Sir James Heath, 30, and his wife Euphemia née Van der Byl, 20. Hylda was christened at Barlaston, Staffordshire, on 19 November 1882.[1]

Marriages and Family

1. She married firstly, George Millais James at Newbold-Pacey, Warwickshire, England, on 22 September, 1907 [2] with whom she had two daughters:

  1. Eileen Alice James, b. 19 Jun 1910. [3]
  2. Daphne Millais James, b. 1912. [4]

Captain James was killed in action in the Battle of Belgium on 3 November 1914 and buried in a wood approximately 3 miles south west of Ypres.[5]

2. She then married Major Cecil Robert Bates, at St Saviour's Church, Walton St, London, on 27 June 1918. The Northampton Mercury reported on 5 July that:

A very charming wedding was solemnised last week at St Saviour's Church, Walton-Street London, between Major Cecil Robert Bates, M.C., D.S.O., R.F.A., second surviving son of the late Sir Edward Percy Bates and Constance Lady Bates of Gyrn Castle, Llanasa, Flintshire and Hylda, widow of Captain G. Millais James, late Buffs Regiment and daughter of Sir James and Lady Heath of Oxenden Hall, Market Harborough. [6]

She and Cecil had a daughter and a son:

  1. Audrey Cecil Bates, b. 15 Jul 1919, [7]d. 1994
  2. Sir Geoffrey Voltelin Bates, 5th Bt. b. 2 Oct 1921, [8]d. 13 Feb 2005. Geoffrey was given his second name,Voltelin after Pieter Voltelin Van Der Byl, his maternal grandmother's Dutch-South African paternal grandfather, Pieter Voltelin Van Der Byl (1798-1849) of Stellenbosch, Cape Colony, South Africa.

Geoffrey was given his second name,Voltelin after Pieter Voltelin Van Der Byl, his maternal grandmother's Dutch-South African paternal grandfather, Pieter Voltelin Van Der Byl (1798-1849) of Stellenbosch, Cape Colony, South Africa.

In November 1931, she was involved in a car crash, in which Daphne was injured. The Leicester Daily Mercury reported on Monday, 23 November 1931 on a:

CAR CRSH NEAR HINCKLEY
Two motor cars crashed near Hinckley at about 4:45pm on Saturday.
Alfred Buckel of Binley Road, Stock, Coventry, was driving his motorcar from Leicester to Coventry, and when at the junction of Coventry-road and Frolesworth-Lane in the parish of Sharnford, he collided with another car driven by Mrs Hylda Madeleine Bates, of Oxendon Hall, near Market Harborough. Miss Heath, who was in Mrs Bates’ car, was injured, and taken to the Hinckley and District Hospital. Miss Heath was badly cut on the head, and after treatment at the hospital, was taken to Oxendon Hall.
Mrs Bates was not injured, but the car was badly damaged. Buckle’s car was slightly damaged, but the occupants were unhurt. [9]

On 1 March 1940, Hylda's name appeared among those of assenters to the nomination of John Profumo for Conservative candidate for the Kettering By-Election. [10]Profumo, educated at Harrow and Oxford, with support among the local gentry, beat the Glaswegian-born Counsellor William Ross, steel worker, candidate for the Workers' and Pensioners' Anti-War Party, who had served for several years on the local council. The Labour Party did not contest the election. Five years later, the Labour candidate, Sir Gilbert Richard (Richard) "Dick" Mitchison Bt CBE, took the seat from Profumo.
