Hylda Madeleine Heath was born on 3 July 1882, to Sir James Heath, 30, and his wife Euphemia née Van der Byl, 20. Hylda was christened at Barlaston, Staffordshire, on 19 November 1882.[1]
1. She married firstly, George Millais James at Newbold-Pacey, Warwickshire, England, on 22 September, 1907 [2] with whom she had two daughters:
Captain James was killed in action in the Battle of Belgium on 3 November 1914 and buried in a wood approximately 3 miles south west of Ypres.[5]
2. She then married Major Cecil Robert Bates, at St Saviour's Church, Walton St, London, on 27 June 1918. The Northampton Mercury reported on 5 July that:

Geoffrey was given his second name,Voltelin after Pieter Voltelin Van Der Byl, his maternal grandmother's Dutch-South African paternal grandfather, Pieter Voltelin Van Der Byl (1798-1849) of Stellenbosch, Cape Colony, South Africa.
In November 1931, she was involved in a car crash, in which Daphne was injured. The Leicester Daily Mercury reported on Monday, 23 November 1931 on a:
On 1 March 1940, Hylda's name appeared among those of assenters to the nomination of John Profumo for Conservative candidate for the Kettering By-Election. [10]Profumo, educated at Harrow and Oxford, with support among the local gentry, beat the Glaswegian-born Counsellor William Ross, steel worker, candidate for the Workers' and Pensioners' Anti-War Party, who had served for several years on the local council. The Labour Party did not contest the election. Five years later, the Labour candidate, Sir Gilbert Richard (Richard) "Dick" Mitchison Bt CBE, took the seat from Profumo.
Hylda died on 29 December 1960 in Bangor, Caernarfonshire, Wales, at the age of 78.[11]She was buried at Great Oxenden, Daventry, Northamptonshire. [12]
