Martha Elizabeth Hege was born in the Moravian community of Bethania, the daughter of Johann Balthasar Hege and Maria Juliana Frey. On her marriage to Gottlieb Spach, she moved to the town of Salem, and remained there for the rest of her life.
Records of the Moravians in North Carolina[1] 5:2168. Jan. 14, 1787, Salem. The betrothal of the single Br. Gottlieb Spach to the single Sr. Martha Elisabeth Hege, of Bethabara, was commended to the prayers of the congregation.
Jan. 21. The single Sr. Martha Elisabeth Hege came from Bethabara [to Salem] with Br. and Sr. Marshall, and after an address by Br. Koehler she was married to the single Br. Gottlieb Spach.
Martha and Gottlieb were the parents of eight children.
She died in 1812, and is buried at Salem Moravian God's Acre.[2][3]
