  • Obituary Matoon Morning Star 12/4/1906

from History of Edgar County 1879 pg 618 quoted by HP Ousley letter 1961: "D. W. Hisey [Heisey], proprietor of the Kansas, Illinois, 'The Kansas House” was one of the first to point out the importance to the travelling public of a good hotel at which to stop and refresh satisfactorily the needs of the inner man. This can be said of the 'Kansas House’ - Also it is safe to say that he is keeping as good a house as any town of its size in southern Illinois. Having 13 years experience he knows what is needed to make a hotel homelike and cheerful. By his uniform kindness and pleasant manners he has made many friends as his patronage will testify. Mr. Hisey is a native of Pennsylvania, being born there on March 4,1826. He was married to Martha Smith of Cumberland County,Pa., March 25, 1853. She was born May 9,1823. They have raised two children, Sarah (now Mrs. E. Goldman) and Mattie. [Cindy’s note: these were Sarah and Martha Littlewood] They located in Kansas, Illinois in 1852. They are now well known and highly respected."

From HPO letter dated November 1960 -- Freeport, Illinois:

Additional data from Mrs. Irene Meyers--

"In the Edgar County, Illinois Clerk's office at Paris, I found the will of David W. Heisey. H. C. Song, husband of Mattie, one of the foster daughters of David Heisey, was executor. The following names were on the paper filed by the executor--

Jacob Heisey - New Augusta, Ind. Mary Meyers - Redmon, Ill. Fanny Heisey - Redmon, Ill. Edward Meyers - Honeywell,, Kans. Abner Meyers - Terre Haute, Ind. Chris Meyers - Oklahoma Mary Kost Riffle – Maryville, Mo. Dated Feb. 4, 1907 - H. C. Song" [Cindy’s note-Actually it is Henry Clay Long not Song]

"Also, David W. Heisey wrote his will in Room 35 in the I.O.O.F. Old Folks home in the city of Mattoon, Coles County, Illinois, this 21st day of Nov. 1906 - filed Dec. 7, 1906.

“H. C. Song gave $2400 bond to settle the estate, In a book I found receipts signed by Mary Heisey Meyers. One was a receipt for money received from David W Heisey estate. The I.O.O.F paid David W. Heisey’s funeral expenses of $20.36. That amount was refunded to them by the administrator of his estate. He had $6.11 in cash at death. He left no personal property, only a lot #4, Brown’s addition to Kansas, Illinois, valued at $800."
